The Obscurants release date

We finally have a release date for the new Alternative 4 album 'The Obscurants'.

Alternative 4 - The Obscurants
The fight for disclosure and justice

With "The Obscurants", Alternative 4 - the current main sphere of Duncan Patterson (ex Anathema, ex Antimatter) - release their second full-length album and continue the line of enquiry that began with their debut "The Brink" in 2011. Like its predecessor, "The Obscurants" stands out due to Patterson's particular songwriting style, which is occasionally echoing the works of his previous bands, yet it is offering his most mature and sophisticated material to date. The album explores avenues such as soft 1960s tremolo vibes, analogue synths and vocoders, to cranked up distorted guitars, with new lead singer Simon Flatley's crooner-like vocals perfectly completing the album's musical expression. Lyrically "The Obscurants" turns out to be a thought-provoking concept album on the subject of cover ups. Be it the media, police, government, or personal deceptions, it's about the obscuring of the truth and the subsequent fight for disclosure and justice.

Into Infinity

This week we are just waiting for a couple more remix tracks to come in and the new Alternative 4 album 'The Obscurants' will be sent off to be mastered. Which means we are well on course for a 2014 release, and can start looking at live shows once we have a release date. Next year will also mark 20 years since I first composed & recorded my own music for an official release (Anathema - Pentecost III). So to commemorate two decades as a songwriter I have decided to forage through my whole discography and pick out suitable songs to re-record as orchestral/soundtrack style pieces. It's something I have been talking about doing for about 10 years already so I'm going to get up and do it while I'm still here. While a good discussion can be healthy and all that, talking about doing something doesn't actually get things done (nor does typing, I know). Also, in addition to songs from the auld archives I have decided to include the 'missing Eternity' parts 5 to 23. This will be my first release under my own name and I'll continue down that road with all things classical and ambient, growing old gracefully and all that. The go-ahead has been given to start working on this project in February, and it is a mammoth task considering the amount of material, so lets hope for a creative and healthy 2014 all round. Some positive and exciting stuff to look forward to (and plenty of hard work). More details and a bit of name-dropping to come soon.

Faith, hope, love, and peace!

Its been a while since I updated this blog. 2013 has been a difficult and quite a tragic year, personally, so it really took a while to find the energy to work on music again. The good news is that the new Alternative 4 album 'The Obscurants' is all finished and mixed.

THE OBSCURANTS tracklisting:-

Theme For The Obscurantist
Chilling Effects
Returning The Screw
The Tragedy Shield
Mr Black

A slight continuation from The Brink, our second album deals with the withholding of information, cover-ups, and generally people 'obscuring' the truth for mercenary gain. As always, the lyrics have been rather prophetic, which never ceases to amaze me. Its quite unnerving really, and I know other writers who feel the same way when it happens to them (or at least when they pick up on it). Cosmic. All this will be documented in the liner notes which will accompany the album. Musically, it is not dissimilar to The Brink. A steady base to the songs that can often drift off on genre-eluding tangents, with the bass lines and pianos playing an important role once again. New vocalist Simon Flatley has done himself proud on the record too. A deep interest in the subject matter really comes across in his delivery.
While we are on that note, we are still looking for a 2nd vocalist/guitarist for future recordings and gigs. After some genuine submissions, and plenty of timewasters, we are yet to find someone who ticks all the right boxes. Anyone interested please email and we can go through everything.

Looking forward to finally releasing this record. I believe we have created something really special here. And with it being our first fresh release with Prophecy Productions, it will be nice to work with a label who will actually do the album justice and give it its place.
Best wishes!

Duncan Patterson
