We got back from the tour late last night after a heavy travelling schedule and minimal amounts of sleep. Thanks to everyone who showed up, bought cds, and those who travelled from other countries just to come and see us. Also thanks to the promoters, club owners & support bands, plus Mighty Digger and Salvadore for guiding us around Italy. Last but not least big up to the other lads for being a pleasure to tour with and for really doing the songs justice. Looking forward to the next one, wherever that may be. They reckon good news comes in threes, so hopefully my bets will come in on Saturday at 5pm. I just got news today that the new Alternative 4 album 'The Brink' is ready to pre-order on October 29th. And also the re-release double vinyl edition of Anathema - Eternity is available to pre-order now.

December tour

Now that the European tourdates are confirmed we are pleased to announce that Mr Martin Powell (ex- My Dying Bride) will be playing piano and keyboards for these gigs, and Paulo Basilio, who mixed The Brink, will be joining us on 2nd guitar.

Unfortunately, the proposed Budapest gig on December 9th is not going ahead now. To say I'm unhappy about this is a huge understatement, after losing a lot of money on flights. Hopefully we can get over there sometime in the future. Apologies to those who were looking forward to it.

Anyway, onwards and upwards! Hope to see you in December.

Ola ola. I'm writing from sunny Portugal at the moment, getting prepared to mix the new Alternative 4 album 'The Brink'. We're also shooting a video here this week for the forthcoming 'False Light' 7" due for release in September. Details here. Then a video clip for the monotonous epic 'Underlooked' will coincide with the album release itself in October. Also next month will see the re-released version of Anathema - 'Eternity' as a limited edition gatefold vinyl package. Looking forward to seeing how that turns out. Things are happening.

Alternative 4/MonumentuM split 7″ ep release

"Duncan Patterson’s new project band will unleash the song ‘False Light’ in late September, as a warm-up to their full length album ‘The Brink’, to be released one month after the EP.
Quoting Duncan’s description, “False Light is probably the heaviest thing I have written in the last decade, at least in its portant riff. It is actually about (music) media control paralleled with religious control, the sheeple and the victims of circumstance.”

It will be presented in a slightly different and edited mix than the album version will be.

Following up the release of the Shape of Despair/Before the Rain split 7″, Avantgarde Music will also release ‘False Light’ as an artists joint venture that will feature on Side B italian dark/doom pioneers MonumentuM, officially at their come back after a few years hiatus. MonumentuM’s contribution will be an interpretation of Pj Harvey’s dramatically beautiful ‘The River’ and will remain exclusive to this EP release, not to be included in their next coming album.

The 7″ will also be optionally offered in bundle with two exclusive (50 ex limited) T-shirts, one per each band and including a cd-listening copy too (mailorder orders only) for those who don’t own a turntable or the lazy owners"

We managed to finish The Pendle Way walk on Tuesday evening after a fairly tough but enjoyable ramble. Duncan Patterson signs to Avantgarde Music

I'm pleased to announce that I have signed a deal with Italy's Avantgarde Music with regards to the Alternative 4 project. I'm looking forward to work together with them, carving out this new chapter in my career.

Recording will commence in May at Transmission Rooms Recording Studio, Ireland, and the album will be tracked at various sessions during summertime. Although 'The Brink' has been written by me in it's entirety, I will be accompanied by long time collaborator and friend Mark Kelson (The Eternal) and drummer Mauro Frison who joined me for the gigs in Argentina 2010. Choral and orchestral sections are being recorded in Monterrey, Mexico. The Brink is a cinematic rock album that I have written conceptually about the dumbing down of society, touching on the music scene, and the corruption of people in power both on a global scale and in the music industry.

I fully understand what I am going to attract by choosing this title for my project, but I see that as a perfect irony considering the subject matter. Those who understand can afford themselves a wry smile, I certainly will. Plus it will allow me to tackle something head-on that has been an albatross for me for over a decade.

Anyway, I'm proud to be working with everyone involved in this and I truly appreciate their enthusiasm for fresh original music. It's a rarity in these times.

2009 went out with a bang at Casa de Rossi, an assortment of dancefloor emperors and a Frenchman who stole my Stetson to use to his advantage. Next thing I know I'm on a plane to Sao Paulo with the worst turbulance I've ever experienced. It was great to be back in Brazil after 16 years. Spending time with good friends, swimming, eating healthily, and generally relaxing. The calm before the storm that was Argentina, which wasn't so calm. I did two acoustic shows in Buenos Aires which went down well. I was lucky to meet up with some musicians who learned and practiced my songs well, and we enjoyed playing together. Two of the Argentinian band are currently working with me on next years album releases 'Herencia' and 'The Brink'. I travelled across the country by bus, bound for Chile as I had another gig booked in Santiago. Though tragedy struck with the collosal earthquake and I had to turn back, so I flew back to Buenos Aires. Luckily we managed to book another date in Santiago so the show went ahead. Again it was a pleasure to play with musicians who actually bother to learn and practice the songs, it's been a rare thing for me in Europe so it's exciting when it does happen. I ended up playing three sets in Santiago. First an acoustic set, then a few songs with a brilliant Pink Floyd tribute band Brain Damage, then a full band set with Anathema tribute Eternity. I decided to stay in Chile after that, following an amazing gesture from Dutch legends The Gathering. They had planned a benefit show in aid of the earthquake victims, with all the proceeds going to the charity. Rene Rutten even raffled one of his guitars to raise more money. I was invited to get involved so I booked a later flight out of Chile. Unfortunately I was struck down with a virus a few days earlier and it only got worse. I managed to catch most of the gig though and it was a great experience to be part of such a special night. Just a pity I wasn't fit enough to get involved more. Big respect to The Gathering! Next up was Mexico where I just relaxed and went horseriding and did Mexican stuff for a couple of months. During which time the Immaculada album was released. Returning to Europe was a bit of a comedown really. It was great to catch up with friends but a different universe compared to the Latin American adventures. I did some more gigs in France then played around the Irish bars in Portugal a couple of months later. Then it was time to get back to work again and start preparations for my upcoming albums. Firstly a collection of traditional and medieval songs with Argentinian flautist Augusto Reinhold, which is being handled by UK independent label Music In Stone. Then late 2011 will see the debut of my new Alternative 4 project 'The Brink' for which currently in discussions about the release. I also did some session work for Corde Oblique and Greek spaceheads Phase. Then I decided to return to Latin America to continue with the pre-production for my projects. The North American release of Immaculada is approaching in mid-January, I'll post more details soon. At the time of writing I'm recovering from a serious illness that could have gotten much worse if I wasn't looked after by people here in Guadalupe, Mexico. Infinite thanks and gratitude for that. For anyone interested, The Yuen Method has been a great help to me in recent weeks. I'd advise everyone to check it out as I've never experienced anything like it. Onwards and upwards!

Adios Europe

A combination of unnaturally itchy feet, typical Liverpool winter weather, and general lack of action in Europe have prompted me to cross the Atlantic again and trapse around the American continent for a while. This will coincide nicely with the US release of Immaculada, which I'll have more news on next week. This week Ive been working on some synth parts for Greek space cadets Phase, as well as recording mandolin parts for the new Corde Oblique cd. Now that is all boxed off I can continue to work on the pre-production for the new Alternative 4 project album "The Brink", which seems to be coming together all by itself. A few nice coincidences have thrown some extremely talented people my way for this one and we're going to take it steady till it matches my expectations. In other news, I just received my copy of the Alternative Matter artbook and it looks stunning. Something I'll be proud of in years to come when I'm trying to impress young musicians. "I used to have a band of me own.." Well worth ordering before they sell out (the artbooks that is, not Mick Moss's band), even if I do say so myself.

After a well deserved lengthy break in sunny Latin America and Portugal it's time to get back into action. The long awaited Antimatter 'Alternative Matter' boxset will be unleashed during the coming weeks, as will the promotional activities that'll go with it.
January 2011 will see the North American release of the latest Íon album 'Immaculada'. Following that will be some live dates in Latin America. Meanwhile this week I have began work on a new album together with Argentinian flautist Augusto Reinhold. This will contain a mix of traditional and medieval songs plus reworkings of some of my own instrumental tracks. We're looking for a release around Easter time 2011. Updates as they come.
And last, but not least, I've recently finished the composition of an album that I've kept quiet about till now, which tips a hat to some of my older influences and instrumentation. This is a one-off album which the project is titled Alternative 4 (after a song that I wrote 13 years ago) and the album is called The Brink. More news on that when a deal is finalised and I have the studio dates.

Four years past since "Madre, Protégenos", Duncan Patterson returns, leading the entity known as Íon. On “Immaculada”, the lone travelling musician has again collected instrumental and vocal souvenirs from his numerous destinations to illustrate the memoirs of his quest.

“Immaculada” was written in a period I was travelling back and forth between Ireland and Greece. The album documents personal experiences of that time, set to introspective and reflective ballads.

Hypnotic and alluring, the album balances both the freshness of Irish landscapes and the warmth of Mediterranean sunbathed seashores, as its haunting Celtic vibe thrives and builds upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its predecessor, the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step closer to the end of this spiritual quest.

Íon has gathered around it an enormous amount of talent, both in the many musicians that have taken part in “Immaculada” and in the group of singers that bring words to life, this time lead by the Irish Lisa Cuthbert. Her heartfelt performances are occasionally accompanied by her sister Aoife Cuthbert, with Mark Kelson (of The Eternal) and gothic/alternative muse Vic Anselmo, providing additional outstanding contributions to the album, among other voices from Argentina, Mexico, Romania or Brazil.

Mostly recorded in the Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin, acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound pulse of the percussion.

“Immaculada” is a collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing light and shade, salvation and loss, beautifully crafted by gifted artists scattered over the world. Available next May 2010 in deluxe Digipak CD on Equilibrium Music.

Duncan Patterson, ex miembro de Anathema y actual integrante de agrupaciones como Antimatter, e Íon, ha reagendado su presentación en nuestro país para el 3 de abril, a las 19 horas, en la Batuta. Esto luego de que el show primeramente programado para marzo tuviera que posponerse debido a la situación que se generó a raíz del terremoto que afectara la zona centro sur de Chile.

El músico mostrará las diversas facetas musicales de su carrera, desde sus inicios con Anathema, donde participó en grandes álbumes como Alternative IV; su paso por Antimatter, banda de atmósferas melancólicas, hasta llegar a su nuevo proyecto personal Íon, una propuesta más folk y experimental, sin dejar de lado la oscuridad y belleza que siempre ha caracterizado su música.

2009 was a busy productive year on many fronts with recording and mixing the second Íon album 'Immaculada', touring as much of Europe as possible with Mick Moss and Lisa Cuthbert, remixing tracks and compiling the forthcoming Antimatter box set 'Alternative Matter'. Immaculada is now finished and ready for action. Mastered in Lille, France by Jerome Trachet , artwork by Carmen Gonzalez, and will be released by Equilibrium Music. There will be a video for the track 'Adoration', featuring Vic Anselmo and directed by Tim 'Tecate Light' Fromont, to accompany the album release. I will post the release date as soon as I have news. Someone kindly deleted my music page from Facebook so heres the new link. The Alternative Matter material is near to completion. Old demos, live tracks, re-recordings, various remixes, unreleased tracks, and video footage documenting the period that I was part of the project up till 2005. It will also mark 10 years since the release of the first album 'Saviour', and will be released by Prophecy Productions later in the year. I also have a classical release in the pipeline but more about that as it happens, so 2010 is looking to be another productive year as far as musical output goes. There´ll be no European tourdates in the near future as I am taking 5 months out in South America to recharge and look for treasure and inspiration. However, I will be playing in Buenos Aires later this month along with some local musicians :-

Things have been busy on the album front this week as it gets near to completion. Guest vocalists Vic Anselmo, Viola of All My Faith Lost, Argentinian singer Laura Santos, and a Romanian Orthodox choir have all been busy in the studio. While Lisa Cuthbert is recording as we speak. Lisa recently added a live version of Anathema's 'Fragile Dreams' to her Myspace page and will again be accompanying Mick Moss and myself on the forthcoming tour in Nov/December. Winter tourdates

It feels strange posting about winter while sat here in sunny Lisboa but its not that far away. October already like. Got the remaining dates for this year for the acoustic sessions with Mick Moss, playing songs of Antimatter, Íon, and the older Anathema stuff that I wrote. This will be the last chance, at least for a good while, to see/hear shows in this format so its worth making the effort to attend if you're into the music and that. I will be in South America and Mexico for the first half of 2010 at least, possibly longer, so the Moss/Patterson Experience will not be active. In the meantime there is the Alternative Matter compilation boxset to look forward to in 2010, which will contain old demos, unreleased recordings, remixes, video footage documenting the time we were working together in Antimatter from 1998 till 2004.

Johnny Patterson Musical

I just received some pics from the musical tribute to my great-grandfather Johnny Patterson at the beginning of August, which took place in Killorglin, Kerry. Great weekend down there, everyone involved with the show gave me a warm welcome, which seems to be a reflection of the general friendliness down there anyway. The show itself was amazing, great actors/actresses as were the musicians and musical arrangements, the dancers, costumes, the script was both humourous and tragic. Magic night all round (till the gardai kicked us out of the pub).

I had a photoshoot the next day for the Kerry newspapers, alongside moustached lead actor Muiris Crowley, who played Johnny, and local historian Pa Houlihan who kindly presented me with a really old poster which he had framed for me. I didn't want to leave the place but I had a wedding in Romania to get to. Life is tough.

Just felt I needed to clear something up due to a large amount of emails & messages Ive received recently regarding 'Antimatter'. I think theres been some confusion with the recent tours I've made together with Mick Moss, often billed under the name 'Antimatter' by promoters. A lot of people seem to think this is still my current project even though I quit nearly 5 years ago. We are playing together live as a collaboration of songs that I've written for various projects, and Micks own tracks which he now releases using the name 'Antimatter', but none of my recent or future recordings or travelling plans are related to that name, only the gigs that we do together. I'll try to get a translation of this in latin Spanish too so I dont have to keep explaining :)

Just back from a recording session in Dublin with uilleann piper Steve Mullen and Lisa Cuthbert, who both did a great job on the songs. The first track 'The Silent Stars' is now complete, I just need to mix it. In the meantime Mark Kelson had been laying down vocal tracks in his home studio in Melbourne, Australia. And Gina Rios in Monterrey, Mexico. So a productive weekend for the album, with sessions in three continents. An unorthodox way to make a record, but thats fine by me.

Work has resumed on the 2nd Íon album, Immaculada, which is scheduled for an autumn release. All of the instrumentation is done now, apart from a couple of of snippets here and there. It's actually sounding like an album now and the artwork that I received last week is really fitting. The overall sound is even more organic than the first album, with a strong presence of the mandolin family in there along with some solid percussion playing, with flute and string sections carrying it all along nicely. Still a few more surprises to go down on tape, then I can start mixing the thing and get it ready for release.

'Enemies' compilation

Today I received copies of the 'Enemies' compilation album that myself and Darren White (original Anathema frontman) contributed a track to. The concept of the album was to get songs/poems that were written or popular during the 2nd World War, performed by artists from countries on different sides of the frontline in their own mother tongues. Our track was based on poetry from Wilfred Owen which was written during World War 1, themed by a very minimal & sombre rendition of Its A Long Way To Tipperary. It makes a suitable intro to the whole thing.
It's worth getting hold of if you can find it (I dont have any ordering info yet), and the packaging is killer.

Wave Gotik report/ Irish dates in July

I arrived back from the WGT festival, Leipzig, sometime on Monday. We were lucky to get there at all,as we got stranded in Zurich for a good few hours while we were rescheduled on another flight to Berlin and still had to drive to Leipzig, so it is a blessing that we got there in time to play. As it happens, the gig went really well and Lisa Cuthbert accompanied us for virtually the whole gig this time, as well as taking lead vocals on Beyond The Morning, which was a welcome addition to the setlist. Looking forward to the new íon album and autumn gigs with herself. I've yet to find many pics of the gig but I'll add them here if any more come in. Heres the setlist anyway. Thanks to the people working at the festival for making sure we eventually got there, and for looking after us during our brief stay. Danke!

I'm a bit late with the tour report, but I'm writing here from Poland right now, waiting to be tattooed by the great Dagmara@Tat Studio Gdansk (click to check out the galleries). I was supposed to be in Mexico but had to cancel, due to the swine flu alert. Best wishes to all my amigos/amigas over there, hope it passes swiftly.
Anyway, the tour went really well. Once again we were joined by Lisa Cuthbert who opened for us on most nights of the tour, as well as joining us on stage for select tracks. Contact her for a copy of her new EP through Myspace. Mr Vincent Cavanagh somehow ended up onstage with me in Paris for some improvised versions of Beatles tracks. Totally unexpected and unrehearsed, but the natives didn't seem to mind. The Paris gig was also the launch date of Micks new Antimatter - Live@An Club cd, which you can purchase here. It was nice to catch up with Anneke Van Giersbergen again in Venlo on Easter Sunday. I think thats the first time we had played together since 1996 (?) The Cologne gig was one of the highlights of the tour, the audience were very receptive and seemed to enjoy The Boy Moss's onstage banter immensely. We were supported by Latvias Vic Anselmo, touring Germany with her own band, who joined us onstage for a killer vocal rendition of Learphol l. It was nice to see some old faces again along the way, hope we don't have to wait to long to meet again. Here are some pics and videos from the other dates, I'll update the links when more come in.

Belated Happy New Year and that. I was advised to create a blog, as keeping my site updated whilst travelling around the world became impossible, so I did just that. Last year was, well, fairly mental like so I wrote some kind of year review :-

2008 started slowly as I was recovering from a broken shoulder, from an accident I had in Istanbul. In early January, a good friend of mine convinced me to spend a weekend in Portugal, where I ended up playing 2 gigs with Anathema's Danny Cavanagh, albeit with my arm all strapped up. It had been 14 years since I was last there and I felt an immediate warmth for the place, the people, the food, the bar prices. Was nice to meet the guys from Equilibrium Records too, who release the íon stuff. Further rehabilitation on my injury took me into March where I travelled to Belgrade for a weekend. Again getting on stage with Danny, this time without the sling, using cheap champagne as an anaesthetic. Then onto Greece for a St Patricks Day party in Thessaloniki, where I was DJing. During this time I decided that I would do the Caminho Portugues in May, a pilgrimage from Porto to Santiago De Compostela. I set up a sponsorship for the childrens hospital in Liverpool for which I raised over £1000. April saw the release of The Aftermaths debut album 'Friendlier Up Here' which I played on a few tracks, including a couple of top 20 singles. The album has seen cracking reviews so far and they band are making waves now in Ireland. Good luck to the lads. Onto May and the pilgrimage, which was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Not only for raising money for the kids, but on a personal and spiritual level too. Back to Thessaloniki again for another Irish party. June gigs in France with Vincent Cavanagh and a talented cellist Greg. During these gigs I met Colin Fromont, who was playing percussion for the support band - Averse, and got him on board to play on my new album. July saw another return to Portugal to work on my next album "Immaculada" which I laid down tracks in a small village outside Lisbon. The recording session went really smoothly, and I had the pleasure of working with some talented local Portuguese musicians who will appear on the album. September saw a reunion with Antimatter's Mick Moss for gigs in Lisbon, Coimbra, and Braga, before heading to Galicia for 2 gigs, finishing up in Santiago De Compostela once again. It was good playing together again after a good few years busy doing different things. Seems that the "Antimatter curse" has been lifted too, which brought us some ridiculous bad luck in the past. November saw a two week tour starting from eastern Europe, again with Mick, through Italy up to Finland and Latvia, finishing up in the Netherlands. Plenty of red wine, early flights, and chicken wings. I spent most of December in Monterrey, Mexico. One of my favourite places on earth. Back there after 4 years. Then back to Portugal for the fourth time in 12 months to see the year out.
